The report by The Economist Intelligence Unit and its subsidiary, EIU Healthcare, examines the prevalence and cost of modifiable risk factors for four major cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in eight Asian markets: China, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. The report estimates that modifiable risk factors, particularly smoking, hypertension, and high cholesterol, account for 530 billion dollars of the direct and indirect costs of CVDs, including heart disease and stroke. Despite the significant impact of these risk factors, they are often overlooked, particularly hypertension and high cholesterol, which are often asymptomatic. The report highlights the need for increased awareness and support from healthcare providers, policymakers, and NGOs to reduce the risk of CVDs. The report also suggests that primary prevention strategies, such as "nudging," which includes improving food labeling and promoting healthier food choices through industry partnerships, can have a positive impact on food choices. Additionally, investing in green spaces and providing subsidies for fitness facilities in urban areas can promote physical activity.
