The Global CCS Institute is an international think tank dedicated to accelerating the deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies to tackle climate change. It works with governments, companies, research bodies, and non-governmental organizations to promote the adoption of CCS and provide expertise, capacity building, and support. There are currently 51 large-scale CCS facilities globally, with 19 in operation, four under construction, and 28 in various stages of development. The Americas lead the way with 24 facilities in operation and various stages of development, followed by 12 in Europe, 12 in Asia Pacific, and three in the Middle East. The total capture capacity of all large-scale CCS facilities has increased by 51% since 2017, reaching 97.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of CO2. The Institute's report highlights the progress made in various sectors, including natural gas, waste to energy, hydrogen production, direct air capture, and more. To achieve global climate change targets, it is estimated that 2,000+ large-scale CCS facilities will be needed.
