The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a Chinese-led global development strategy that aims to enhance connectivity and cooperation among countries. This IDS Bulletin explores the BRI's potential to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the challenges it faces in achieving equitable and sustainable development. The Digital Silk Road and its potential to support the SDGs are discussed, as well as the environmental and social standards of the Green Belt and Road Initiative. The BRI's impact on specific countries, such as Myanmar, Kenya, and Pakistan, is also examined. The article concludes that while the BRI presents opportunities for sustainable development, it must also address challenges such as ensuring compliance with environmental and social standards and promoting equitable distribution of benefits.
