The South African electricity mix in 2022 was dominated by coal, accounting for 80% of electricity generated, with nuclear, diesel, hydro, wind, solar PV, and CSP accounting for the remaining 20%. Coal energy contributed 80.1% of the total energy demand, nuclear energy contributed 4.6%, and renewable energy (excluding hydro) contributed 13.7%. The remaining 1.6% came from diesel. System energy demand in 2022 was similar to the previous year but 2.2% less than in 2019, with peak system demand at 34.6 GW. Coal contributions continued to decrease, while local hydro generation doubled.
