Patentapplicationsgrewby3.6%lastyear.Trademarkandindustrialdesignfilingactivitygrewbyevenmore–5.5%and9.2%,respectively.Andworldwide IPfilingsreachedanall-timehigh,with3.4millionpatentapplications,13.9milliontrademarkapplications(specifying18.1millionclasses)andapplicationsfor 1.5milliondesignsfiledlastyear. Thisisconsistentwiththefactthat2021wasayearofrobustrecoveryinmanypartsoftheworld.The globaleconomygrewby6%lastyear,thefastestrateofincreaseinmorethanfourdecades. Italsoreflectsthemulti-facetedconsequencesoftheCOVID-19crisis.Ontheonehand,thepandemic triggeredextremedisruptionacrosslargeswathesoftheglobaleconomy.Ontheotherhand,itprovedtobea WorldIntellectualPropertyIndicators2022 potentandpowerfulacceleratorofcertaineconomicsectorsandtrends.Thiswasespeciallytruewhenitcametonewandfrontiertechnologies,withbusinessesandgovernmentsaroundtheworldidentifyingdigitalizationandinnovationaskeyavenuesoffuturegrowth. Tounderscorethis,thereportfindsthatevenattheheightofthepandemicin2020patentfilingsrelatingtocomputertechnologygrewbyover13%,cementingthisareaasthemostfrequentlyfeaturedtechnologyinpublishedpatentapplicationsworldwide.Indeed,takentogether,thefivelargestfieldsforpatentapplications–computertechnology,electricalmachinery,measurement,digitalcommunicationsandmedicaltechnology–nowaccountforathirdofallapplicationsglobally,upfivepercentagepointsfromadecadeago. Similarly,researchandtechnologyisthetopsectorinwhichapplicantssoughttrademarkprotectionabroadlastyear,accountingforoneinfiveglobalnon-residentfilings.Nextarehealth,clothingandaccessories,andleisureandeducation,allareaswheretherelationshipbetweenbrandsandconsumersisbeingreshapedbythedigitalacceleration. Byilluminatingkeygrowthsectorsandheadlineindicators,aswellasprovidingawholerangeofanalysisrelatingtoIPactivities,wehopethatthereport’srichdatasetwillfunctionasapracticaltoolforpolicymakers,IPprofessionals,industry,academia,andothersta
