ItisthereforecriticalthatIPknowledgeandskillsareavailabletoall.TheWIPOAcademyistheworldleaderinprovidingIPtrainingandeducationcourses,withaspecialfocusonparticipantsfromdevelopingcountries,least-developedcountriesandcountriesintransition.TheWIPOAcademyhasaproudtraditionofreachingpeopletheworldover,welcomingitsone-millionthparticipantin2021. Atatimewheninnovationandcreativityarebecomingmoreopen,moreglobalandmovingfaster,IPcannolongerremainjustatechnicalverticalofinterestonlytoIPspecialists.Itmustbecomeapowerfulcatalystforjobs,investments,businessgrowthand,ultimately,economicandsocialdevelopmentinallpartsoftheworld.ThisiswhyWIPOisworkingtobuildamoreinclusiveIPecosystem.OnethatconnectsnotjustwithIPexperts,butalsowithcreators,innovators,entrepreneurs,startups,smallandmediumenterprises(SMEs),researchers,artists,indigenouspeoplesandothers. TheWIPOAcademyiskeytothisvision.Over70percentofbeneficiariesoftheAcademy’sIP skills-buildingcoursesarefromdevelopingcountriesand54percentarewomen. SincethelaunchofourMediumTermStrategicPlaninJune2021,ourcourseprogramhasevolvedsignificantly,goingbeyondtransfersoftechnicalIPknowledgetoplacestrongemphasisonthebuildingofpracticalIPskills. Togivejustasnapshot:newWIPOAcademycoursesonIPandexports,tourismandsportsaresupportingtheuseofIPasatoolforbusinessstrategyinevenmoresectorsoftheeconomy.WepilotedIPyouthcampstoraiseIPawarenessamongfutureinnovatorsandcreatorsinJordan. TheAcademyisleveragingitsever-growingnetworkofIPTrainingInstitutions(IPTIs)toscaleupthedeliveryoftailoredskills-buildingcoursesforwomenandentrepreneurs,includingincriticalareassuchasCOVID-19economicrecovery.TomatchtheevolvingneedsoftheIPlandscape,newWIPOJointMaster’sDegreeProgramsfocusingonentrepreneurship,innovationandIPmanagementareunderwayinthePhilippinesandSaudiArabia. DarenTangDirectorGeneral Preface Theyear2023willbeoneoftransformationintheworkoftheWIPOAcademy.Whilecontinuingimplementationofitsprimarymandatetofacilitateglobalaccesstointellectualproperty(IP)capacity-building,particularlyindevelopingcountries,least-developedcountriesandcountriesintransition.Itwillalsotargetnewbeneficiaries,inparticularfromtheprivatesector,andwillincreaseitsfocusonskillsdevelopmentandIPcommercialization. The2023editionoftheWIPOAcademyPortfolioofEducation,TrainingandSkillsDevelopmentProgramsoffersawiderangeofcoursescoveringfundamentalandmultidisciplinaryaspectsofIPinavarietyofformatsandlanguages.Coursesrangefrombasicandadvanceddistancelearning(DL),tospecialized,professionaldevelopmenttrainingforgovernmentofficials,andtohighereducationthroughJointMaster’sDegreeProgramsinIPatrenowneduniversities.CoursecurriculahavebeenreviewedtoincreasethefocusonIPskills-building,aswellasinareassuchasIPcommercialization.Theportfolioalsoincludesdedicatedcoursesaddressedtoentrepreneurs,exporters,researchers,inventorsandIPmanagers,designedtoprovidethemwiththetechnicalknowledgeandskillsneededtousetheIPsystemtosupportbusinessgrowthandjobcreation. Thecoursesaredeliveredinclosecooperationwithpartnerinstitutionsandwithexternal,independentacademicexpertise.TheAcademyhasastrongreputationwhichrestsuponthediversityofitscourseofferings,qualityofinstruction,itscredibilityasaneutralandimpartialsourceofknowledge,anditsextensiveinternationalnetworkofhighlyrespectedpartnerinstitutions. ThehighlightsandnewdevelopmentsincoursesofferedbytheAcademyin2023are summarizedbelow: •SpecializedadvancedtrainingcoursesonspecificIPareaswillbeofferedduringtheyearforgovernmentofficialsandotherdedicatedpublic-sectorstakeholders,inArabic,English,FrenchandSpanish.TheseadvancedtrainingcourseswillbeofferedinclosecooperationandfullpartnershipwithMemberStates,IPofficesandIPinstitutions. •In2023,theProfessionalDevelopmentProgram(PDP)willcontinuetostrengthentheskills-basedapproach,introducedin2021,toitstrainingcoursesintegratingnewcomponentsandnewteachingandlearningmethodologiestobetterfacilitatetheacquisitionofpractical IPskillsbygovernmentofficials.Inaddition,thisformatwillcontinuetoenhancethequalityoftrainingcourses,respondtonewlearningneedsandpooltheresourcesofpartnerinstitutions.Themainfeaturesofthenewformatare(i)inclusionofassignmentsandprojectsasanintegralpartofthecurriculum;(ii)la
