Canada generates a significant amount of municipal solid waste (MSW), which includes trash and garbage. The amount of waste generated has increased over the past two decades, with 35.5 million tonnes generated in 2018, up from 30.7 million tonnes in 2002. Despite this increase, the authors note that when population and economic activity are taken into account, the amount of waste per person has remained relatively stable. The study also found that the majority of waste is disposed of in landfills, with a smaller percentage being recycled or composted. The authors suggest that improving waste diversion rates and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills could help to improve the management of MSW in Canada.
