The Investment Company Institute (ICI) has released its 2021 Investment Company Fact Book, which provides an overview of trends and activities in the investment company industry. The report shows that total worldwide assets invested in regulated open-end funds are $71.1 trillion, with the US accounting for $34.2 trillion, Europe accounting for $23.3 trillion, Asia-Pacific accounting for $10.0 trillion, and the rest of the world accounting for $3.6 trillion. US-registered investment company total net assets are $34.6 trillion, with mutual funds accounting for $27.0 trillion, exchange-traded funds accounting for $7.2 trillion, closed-end funds accounting for $309 billion, and unit investment trusts accounting for $95 billion. The US retirement market has total retirement market assets of $39.4 trillion, with DC plan and IRA assets invested in mutual funds accounting for $39.4 trillion and 63% of households owning tax-advantaged retirement savings. US-registered investment companies’ share of US corporate equity is 32%, US and foreign corporate bonds is 24%, US Treasury and government agency securities is 12%, and US municipal securities is 29%. The median mutual fund assets of mutual fund-owning households is $200,000, and the median number of mutual funds owned is 4. Regulated open-end funds include mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and institutional funds.
