Renewable energy policies drive innovation in complementary grid technologies, according to a report by the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation. The study found that public R&D funding for renewable energy has a consistent, significant positive impact on innovation in technologies such as energy storage, grid efficiency, and fast-ramping combustion. The report also found that environmental taxes and renewable energy certificates have positive impacts on innovation. The analysis was based on data measuring the impact of seven policies on patents granted from 1992 to 2014 in OECD countries.
