Nevertheless;littleisunderstoodaboutthewellbeingofSoftwareEngineers duringthepandemicorhowtechnologyteamshaveevolved.Thisstudy representsthefirstattempttodoso.Fromburnouttoproductivity,wesoughttounderstandthestateofsoftwareengineeringin2021. Thefieldworkofthisstudywascarriedoutatremarkablespeed.fromthe23ro to24thofJune2021.Toachievethisfeat,wepartneredwithresearchagencySurvation. JunadeAli Survationhaveaformidablerecordwhenitcomestoopinionpolling.Unlike UKGeneralElections.Theyalsocorrectlypredictedtheoutcomesofthe2014 ScottishIndependenceReferendumandthe2016referendumontheUnitedKingdom'smembershipoftheEuropeanUnion. SurvationisbothaMarketResearchSocietyCompanyPartnerandmemberof theBritishPollingCouncil. Toreduceself-selectionbias,invitationstocompletesurveysweresentoutto websiteinwhichanyonecanchoosetotakepart. Interestingly,weidentifiedthatonly26%ofSoftwareEngineersfind themselvessolelyworkingonproductdevelopment.74%findthemselves workingonoperationsinsomeform,evenifonlyaspartoftheirjob.Indeed,44%ofSoftwareEngineersfoundthemselvesinhybridroles. Wethenaskedifthepandemichadmadethingsworseforpeople.81%reportedpersonallyfeelingmoreburntoutofworkduetotheCovID-19 pandemic.32%saidthiswastruetoa“great"extentand30%toa"moderate"extent.
