Whilenotableprogresshasbeenmadetowardsaccesstoreliable,sustainable,modernandreasonablypricedenergyinrecentyears,215millionpeopleinLLDCsstilllivewithoutreliableenergy.Accesstoenergyisanessentialenablerforeconomicactivities–suchasagriculture,commerceandindustry–thatarevitalforgrowthinLLDCs.Furthermore,scaling-uprenewableenergyinthesecountriesiskeytobuildingresilienceandaddressingtheimpactsofclimatechange. TheViennaProgrammeofAction(VPoA)fortheperiod2014-2024highlightsenergyamongitspriorities,andinvestmentandpowerinfrastructureupgradescomprisethefoundationforLLDCstostructurallyremodeltheireconomies,increaseaccesstoaffordablecleanenergy,andboosttheirtradepotential. Therefore,theenergytransitionisatoppriorityforallLLDCs,whichmustleveragetheirexistingdomesticbioenergy,solar,hydropower,windandgeothermalresources.Thedropincostsforrenewableenergy,coupledwithrapidtechnologicalinnovation,provideanexcellentopportunitytodeployrenewableenergyinthesecountries.
