The International Energy Agency (IEA) examines various energy issues, including the supply and demand of EV batteries. As electric car sales continue to rise, the focus is shifting to the supply chain of these batteries, which typically account for 30-40% of the value of an EV. The current battery and minerals supply chains are centered around China, which produces a significant portion of the world's EV batteries. However, the race to net zero will require attention to be paid to the security of supply of critical minerals and metals needed for EV batteries. The IEA advocates for policies that enhance the reliability, affordability, and sustainability of energy in its member countries and beyond.
