This research brief examines the racial implications of layoffs in the public sector. Since January 2009, state and local governments have laid off 429,000 workers. The report updates a previous study on Black workers in the public sector, examining how they have fared during the past three years of recession and recovery. The public sector is important to Black employment prospects in both time periods, and the wage inequality faced by Black workers is different between public and private sectors.
